Yes, when I started with linux it was because a friend showed
me a linux system on 2 floppy disks that came with a GUI,
It impressed me a lot, so I started dissecting this stuff.
It was Mulinux, still available at
https://micheleandreoli.org/public/Software/mulinux/
Inside there was mostly busybox and a few scripts.
Busybox was impressive for me and I started playing
around to do my own thing. One day I hit a bug
in the strings applet and reported it to the busybox
mailing list and the good people over there told
me to fix it by myself and more or less on the fly
with great patience taught me over numerous iterations
how to program in C. Yes It was FUN a lot of.
Ciao,
Tito
