I started over again and switched to us.deb.devuan.org and that went much smoother.

my only complaint is that the efi partition needs to be formatted fat32 and you don’t get the option to format the efi partition. did a little trickery to get the partition formatted and the rest of the installation went smoothly. It’s going to take me a couple of days to get this machine back to where it was.
