Not for for at least two decades.

Started out on X11 sessions using a pre-configured .xinitrc, IIRC. Used
AIX' CDE for a little while and switched back to plain X11 sessions.

Used GNOME for a while when I first installed Debian 'hamm'. Didn't
like how it accumulated bloat in newer versions and jumped to KDE. That
suffered from the same problem, so I went on the Xfce. I stayed with
that for a long time (like 15 years of so) until I figured I didn't need
a desktop environment. Just a GUI would do for me. At the same time I
also felt an inexplicable urge to try a tiling window manager. I picked
i3-wm. A bit later I decided to try out wayland with sway as a mostly
drop-in replacement for i3-wm.
One at least one of my machines I don't even have xwayland installed.

Works for me, for now. Your experience may vary.
