The other thing I did on a previous install was to automount usb drives on insertion. But I've forgotten my automounter foo, so would have to dig into it again.

The only ?fat filesystem I've used is vfat - it's always been enough for file exchange with M$-speaking aliens, and pmount seems to handle that if memory serves. It'd take more data than I exchange for exfat to be necessary here, but I see the elegance of it not being a hack.
