A few years ago I read one of Steve’s emails mentioning openbox and decided to give it a go, migrating from XFCE. He has a stack of info on his website that was useful for the initial setup:

The tip on 6 pixel margin on the left side is excellent as it allows to always have an area available for mouse-click opening the openbox menu.
I haven’t yet got into using dmenu so I’ve stuck with the xfce4-appfinder package hooked to alt+f2 and alt+f3 same as it was in XFCE. This one is good as it searches through .desktop application files in addition to $PATH. If I could get dmenu to somehow search .desktop files then I might give it another go.

Also tint2 for a top panel/taskbar and tilda hooked to F1 for a drop-down terminal.
