You mean like that script I have been writing and telling you about?
Just a reminder -
At boot it figures out what ALL of your sound output devices are.
It lists them. For blind people is speaks through each one in turn,
telling you which card number it is.
Then it asks you to type the number of the one you actually heard, and
creates your asound.conf file.
Lots of complications, like the fact that for HDMI outputs you have to
turn them on first, which was mentioned already. Another quirk is that
EVERY graphics card I have tested it on has MORE sound output devices
than actual physical outputs.
As a user you can run it with different arguments to get JACK setup with
all of those devices it found, including input devices, MIDI, and
joysticks as MIDI controllers. Not everyono will need that, so you don't
need to do that.
