I saw the page on wiki.webevaluation.nl - that put me onto the trail of
zutty.
For me, the thing which stands out at the moment is that there are so
few reports of this problem. Given that, for installations on affected
hardware (old?) it effectively cripples the default terminal
application, it should have caused a lot of yells for help by now. So
I'm tending to think that it is/was a configuration error which was
quite quickly noticed and corrected. The new daedalus test install
which I'm currently doing should give more info (it's netinstall, so
should be pulling in the latest versions of the packages). If the
default for x-terminal-emulator is /usr/bin/xfce4-terminal.wrapper,
then the error has gone away. But if it's still pointed at zutty . . .
