Thanks for testing. I was encouraged by your report to try to get speech
working here on my laptop that lists HDMI as card 0, and I managed to do
it by creating /etc/asound.conf to set card 1 as the default. Is that how
others deal with it? Would it be helpful to include a script to do that
for the user?

Also, I was wondering if you have any thoughts about the speech-synthesis
install that gives you the mate desktop with a screen reader. Do you have
any experience with that? I made a live iso of such an install and I'm
wondering if that would be useful. If you wanted to try it, I'll upload it
and post the link in a separate email with a more appropriate subject
line. (it's daedalus, not excalibur, and it's not minimal)
