It's a shame runit didn't work for you! I wonder if it is because at the
time, the new runit-services package hadn't migrated into testing? That
happened this morning! It was missing in daedalus before that because of
a false positive from the automatic package tests.

As of today all the runit packages should be in good shape in the
testing distribution, I believe!
