KDE supports FreeBSD as well.

But it is still challenging to keep KDE's Plasma fully working on Devuan
as services used by it may not start with other than Systemd init. And
only a few people working on it to keep stuff running.

Like Pipewire or power-profiles-daemon.

Also there is some limited functionality in KDE's Plasma that does not
work without Systemd. Some of that used to work before. Like display of
process monitor with applications instead of processes using some
heuristic to make out what counts as an application from a user's point of
view.

But in general I'd say KDE is more open to other operating systems than
GNOME.

I installed a VM with Alpine Linux using Plasma on top of OpenRC. Works
really nice.

I still think there should be no direct tie between desktop environment
and PID 1 ever. Even if with Systemd the tie may in part not be to pid 1
but systemd running with "--user" for each user running Plasma. But then
how on earth can it be a good idea to include all the functionality
required for a user running systemd into PID 1 to begin with?

Unfortunately there is not much reasoning. Many have given in to Systemd.

Best,
