Intuition plays a role, but the quadruple tradeoff in picking your next
diagnostic test is, in no particular order:

* Ease
* Likelihood
* Even divisions
* Safety

Don't do unsafe tests, period, if they risk bodily injury, legal
jeopardy, or substantial expense.

Assuming you have another monitor with the same kind of input, the
easiest thing in the world is to try the other monitor and see if the
problem goes away. If it does, try the monitor displaying the problem
on another computer. If the same problem occurs on the other computer,
you've 99% implicated either the monitor or its cable.

By the way, *my* intuition commands me to ask this question: Are you
using an nVidea video card?
