Sujet: [DNG] migration questions

Hello,

I've been running a KVM host machine on an old AMD FX(tm)-8320 8 core
processor with 32 GB of RAM on a SATA SSD and a xfs filesystem. It's
running Daedalus and it's running fine and has been since Devuan
Beowulf.  The motherboard is either Gigabyte or MSI. The hardware is
getting long in the tooth.

I have ordered a supermicro motherboard and an epyc 16 core 32 thread
processor, 64 GB of RAM and a 2TB NVME drive.  There are also spinning
drives in this machine.

The current plan is to dd the SATA drive to the NVME drive. I take
snapshots of the virtual machines nightly and push those snapshots to
one of the spinning drives, a backup server and another fileserver.  So
taking a snapshot prior to shutdown and pushing those snapshots to
another drive isn't a problem. I also plan to move the hardware that I'm
replacing to the even older host.

What's the chance of this thing booting without re-installing Daedalus?
It's not the end of the world if I have to install a fresh copy and
import the virtual machines. I'm curious if things are plug and play
enough to be successful on the first try.  This is a project that will
happen in the next few weeks to a month. AMD microcode is installed on
all the machines including the kvm's.

I also worry about the Virtual machines running, but they do start up on
the backup host which is running even older hardware (AMD Phenom(tm) II
X6 1055T). Moving the current hardware to that machine will ensure that
I can boot them.

Thanks in advance,
Curtis
