This doesn't answer your question, and I don't guarantee it will work,
and if it does work it works by getting rid of that obnoxiating
framebuffer, but you might want to try this:

If it works, you'll have old-school terminal style 80x24 text, with
absolutely no graphics, in your virtual terminals.
