If you are just starting out, why are you using an end-of-life release?
Devuan names its releases alphabetically, and we're currently on Daedalus as
the stable release. I think this is the one you should start from.

Please explain *exactly* how you put that image onto the USB stick.

Telling us what command you used for that would be good, too.
I've skipped responsing to the rest of your posting about secure boot etc -
hopefuly someone else can respond to that - it's simpy something I have no
personal experience of, but I thought the above comment and questions were
worth making anyway.
