Certainly very different from familiar languages. The history is
interesting. IBM was central in early development.

With many languages, development focused on the computing environment.
Appropriate for system programming. When developing APL, Iverson
focussed on the mathematics. You can see that in his book
_A_Programming_Language_.
The special character set can be a distraction from the concepts. If
interested in mathematical programming, I suggest learing J and
keeping APL for reference.
