Fortunately the sodium is already preburnt for your enjoyment.
Think table salt (Na+Cl-) not elemental metallic sodium (Na).
Hence also the category name "Lithium Ion". The Li needs to
be ionic Li+, otherwise it wouldn't be interested in migrating
between the different terminals of the cell. Same for Na+
The impressive Lithium battery fires that one might have seen videos
of are typically related to the release of Oxygen when one of the
Oxides decomposes, as far as I understand. The newer chemistries try
to substitute other groups there, notably phosphate in the case
of LiFePO - though of course the cell still contains energy which
can escape in uncontrolled and unpleasant ways.
