That was me. K&R examples were cutesy tricky. Perhaps that was because
optimizers were very bad back then, but it wasn't a good learning
source because of the cutesy-tricky. In my opinion, a for statement
should look like a for statement.

True, but there was a book called "The C Puzzle Book" that was a
spectacular C learning resource that ultimately taught me C after I
failed with K&R edition 1.
