> Repair? A decent oscilloscope the size of a multimeter now costs about $US 300.
Yes actually I use a USB oscilloscope which is called the Digilent Analog Discovery 2. It's pretty good although I tend to avoid setting it up for quick jobs. I am considering getting a standalone model. I bought the Analog Discovery from a student I used to teach, she showed me hers and I was quite impressed so I asked her to buy me one from a former student of her course which she did. I was not impressed with the course using clip leads instead of probes, so I ordered some good ones as a gift for her and another set for myself. Sad to say she gave me her AD2 and probes when she left the country to take up a job in Shanghai with Huawei, I tried to convince her to keep them but she said she would probably be doing a lot of overtime as a junior engineer at Huawei and would not have time for home projects. Sensible! So anyway now I have two of these setups.
As to the repair, I think I can do it. I got interested in historic computers and i have done some repairs on them which turned out surprisingly easy when schematics are available. For instance on an Apple IIc green monitor i discovered a fault in a vertical sync circuit and replaced a 350V 1uF capacitor to fix the problem (without killing myself too). Lately i had problems with an Apple IIc disk drive and I am planning to replace the write amplifier chip on the analog board, the chip arrived a while ago although i want to do some probing before committing to replacing it. (I also bought a second machine which i can use to compare signals).
Trouble is i dont really have time atm so i am usually looking for a quick solution. For instance when family laptop failed the quickest way was not to fix it for now, but to order a new battery for another laptop that i rescued from a tech recycling dumpster.
Cheers, Nick

This idea was supported by the fact the machine sometimes fails POST. But lately I was in the BIOS setup and I saw a warning that the 3.3V is low (only 2.9V). So when i have time for troubleshooting ill check it with a multimeter and see about repairing or replacing the PS. Not anxious to do that as its a pricey 1000W corsair that i bought for a tidy sum on ebay but needs must. Anyway, I recommend you run on a different but similar HW platform and see if your issue goes away.

Not wanting to start any flame wars but i distrust present memory management strategies and the OOM killer fills me with dread, even though i only encounter it very rarely and usually because I did something silly like coding an unintentional fork bomb or whatnot. And maybe if you ensure your system has adequate swap it might help the issue?
