apt-get remove cups
apt-get install lprng

# configure lprng for your printer - see tutorials
# may involve printcap - be *very* afraid ;-)

I also recall the addition of magicfilter lets you print
more variety of file types, automatically performing the
necessary conversions.

And say goodbye to the generally easy-to-use web interface
you enjoyed (or suffered with :-) using CUPS.
