Hello, Devuan community members,
This is kind of off-topic but does kind of relate to Devuan in a more
general, software Freedom or open standards and protocols kind of way.
The European Commission has some initiatives regarding 'Digital Identity
Wallets'. There is a brief window for feedback regarding these
initiatives which will affect the ability to use Free/Libre and Open
Source Software in the future. There are also repercussions for privacy
and such.
The deadline for feedback is next Monday which is September 9th, 2024.
The gist is that the current Digital Identity Wallet initiative has five
subactivities, listed below as text and with authoritative links in the
forwarded message down at the end of this mail.
– integrity and core functionalities
– person identification data and electronic attestations of attributes
– protocols and interfaces to be supported
– certification
– trust framework
I have already tried contacting April.org, EFFI, and FFII about this
initiative but have been unable to find valid, functional contact
information for any of those organizations whether via e-mail, phone, or
snail mail. I've posted a similar message to LibrePlanet.
LibrePlanet, GNU, FSF, April, EFFI, FFII, and maybe even EFF definitely
have a stake in this but are out of reach.
Again, there is a window of opportunity for feedback which is open
starting from the other week, 12 August, 2024, which runs until 9
September 2024.
Could you please recommend to me someone already versed in these Digital
Identity Wallet initiatives or who would be both interested and able to
become versed in them? Or we can discuss them here. I've provided
brief quotes below and, at the end, the EC's notification message with
the actual links.
Regards,
Lars
1) European Digital Identity Wallets
– integrity and core functionalities
"This is one of four initiatives on the main set-up of
the European Digital Identity Wallets. It aims to lay
down rules to ensure that Member States provide wallets
that are interoperable and can be used for all their
intended purposes.
For example, the wallets should enable:
secure online cross-border identification for a wide
range of public and private services;
• sharing of electronic attestations; and
• issuance of electronic signatures."
2) European Digital Identity Wallets
– person identification data and electronic attestations
of attributes
"It aims to ensure the smooth lifecycle management of both
personal identification data and electronic attestations,
covering issuance, verification, revocation and suspension.
This guarantees that users’ personal identification data and
electronic attestations are issued to the wallet and can be
disclosed to relevant parties."
3) European Digital Identity Wallets
– protocols and interfaces to be supported
"This is one of four initiatives on the main set-up of
the European Digital Identity Wallets. It aims to ensure
the proper implementation of protocols and interfaces
crucial for the effective operation of the wallets.
By supporting common protocols and interfaces, the wallets
can guarantee:
• successful issuance and presentation of identification
data and electronic attestations;
• successful data sharing between wallet units; and
• efficient communication with relevant parties."
4) European Digital Identity Wallets
– certification
"This initiative aims to lay down the requirements for
certification of the conformity of European Digital Identity
Wallets. Where Member States cannot use European cybersecurity
certification schemes based on Regulation (EU) 2019/881 or if
such schemes are not sufficient, they must establish national
certification schemes to supplement them. These schemes must,
for instance, specify the competence requirements and an
evaluation process."
5) European Digital Identity Wallets
– trust framework
"It aims to ensure that the electronic notification system
established by the European Commission acts as a secure and
transparent communication channel for exchanging information
between the Commission and the Member States."
