I haven't read that thread and I have never used something else than exim, so
I just can tell you from the exim side: I use it on mail server since around
2003 having 150+ accounts and 60+ domains on it. I never had any problems with
that software. Learning it can be demanding, but there is excellent
documentation. It is very flexible, I got the impression you could even use it
for bookkeeping if configured accordingly... :-)
I use exim with dovecot, srsd, spamassassin, greylistd and clamav,
authentication is made through dovecot. Mails are passed via lmtp to dovecot.
I use pure exim configuration for virtual domain handling. Mails get stored in
Maildir+ on disk.
The question of caldav/carddav kicks in aswell, like Nick mentioned. So the
SMTP daemon is only one piece in a bunch of software to consider.
For other machines, that just need to send out mails for administrative
purpose, exim is well packaged and integrated into Debian. The upgrade problem
mentioned by altoid and Brad does not apply to users, that let exim configure
through the package maintainers scripts. It applies only to more complex
systems and there are hints in /usr/share/doc/exim4-config/NEWS.Debian.gz.
