It seems that this has gone way over my head very fast, did not
realise that it would get so complex.

I think it will be best to wait till Debian/Devuan adds the
new version (1.4.1) of the SLiM package, at the very least to
*testing* or *proposed updates* so I can test it in my Devuan
Daedalus box and eventually report.

If not, I may try to see about installing the previous Beowulf or
Chimaera version.

And if that does not work, consider using the solid and time proven
*startx*. 8^)
