Sorry, I was a bit short. I had done very extensive checking and much
searching before posting. As usual, the real problem was somewhere I
wasn't looking: I didn't start the network in a standard way and so the
lo loopback network device wasn't configured.

Pity that neither ssh or X11 report errors fully :-)

I apologise if my slightly impatient response justifiably hurt your feelings. It was
