My 2c is that unless you're doing real time monitoring of processes, I
have trouble understanding the need for more that two.

I understand two from all the document production I carried out over
the decades. Two would have made copy and paste easier, but early on it
was CAD on Dos.

These days, the hardware will support many virtual desktops, so it is
very easy to have a number of desktops that can be hotkey or panel click
switched to the task you need to currently work on.
