My primary workstation is in the sense that it is the machine on which I work
90% of the time, but I don't always keep it turned on, so it is not suitable
to function as a server for the other machines in the LAN (a small audio
server, a couple of laptops, smartphone and tablet) that I use occasionally
and which are served (DHCP/DNS) by the router (which I configured to use
custom DNS servers and not those of the provider)

Do you mean using a static IP in /etc/network/interfaces ?

Nothing wrong, I like it. But ISC has announced the end of maintenance for
ISC DHCP and if I have not misunderstood, it is possible that in the future
it will be removed from Debian packages... so I'm interested in understanding
what the alternative might be

I am on Openbox/LXDE, using simple-netaid by aitor (both ncurses and gtk
interfaces)... Sorry if I'm slow to understand, but which user interface
are you referring to?
