There are other alternatives like ceni (ncurses interface for ifupdown and wpa),
setnet and wicd (unmaintained). I use simple-netaid plus ifupdown and wpa_supplicant.

It does provide interfaces for both Gtk and Qt that may work in the systray as standalone GUI apps,
other than panel plugins. But, again, I don't know it in detail.
