It *is* part of a growing trend.
ie: as intended by the creators of systemd.

And at github they are quite clear about it.

This means that to be used in Devuan, someone has to provide both the
scripts and the support for them to make it work with our
systemd-less distribution.

I seems (to me) that it is *much* more than just *sanitising* a
package to work in Devuan.
