My 2c is that this is the way to go. I've stuck with alsa only from the
beginning and apart from an issue with GPU inserting HGMI ports as
card0, have not had any problems with sound in firefox or falkon.

Caveat single user, but so long as each of your users either use the
system sound config or both user have identical sound config, there
shouldn't be an issue.

FWIW, most of my multimedia s enjoyed through vlc.
