And then run alsa-info.sh from http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh
which should give you a pretty comprehensive view of the situation.

If you approach the alsa people, they will ask for that output as a
starting point.

But obviously try aplay and alsamixer first and see what is happening.
