Do it then if you have nothing better to spend time on. Alternatives
are always good.

If all of the above are already mounted, then nothing would fail. I
was addressing the specific problem where / is already mounted, and
the system mounts /lib/modules later in the boot process instead of
right away; the scenario Mark described. If /boot is on /, but
/lib/modules isn't mounted until later, then a softlink from
/lib/modules to /boot/modules won't be accessible.
