One thing I've done was to install every Devuan version in a qemu guest. Because VM
guests are much faster than disk access on bare metal, these installations go very
fast, so if I make a mistake I can't fix I can quickly reinstall. Once the kinks are
ironed out, it's easier to install it on the bare metal host.
