Why scrypt?

You could do curve25519 point multiplications and any hardware for mining would be dual-use for
encryption.

Or you could hash the block header, use the hash as a seed to create a random protean, then fold
that protean some number of cycles and use the result as the PoW hash. Then any hardware designed
for mining would be dual-use for curing cancer.

People talk a lot about electricity consumption, but nobody talks about what happens to all of the
previous generation mining equipment collecting dust.
