FYI, here's what I've used for generating the ID while working
on getting the remaining kernel driver bugs sorted out:

struct timespec ts;

clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME, &ts);
id = (ts.tv_sec % 100) * 100;
id += (ts.tv_nsec / 1000000) / 10;
...
cmd = sprintf("U%i04", id);

But maybe there's some easier way to come up with a mostly
unique command ID.
