Seconded.

Unless permanently connecting two separate offices (multiple hosts both ends) I found the aggravation of setting up a VPN just not worth the effort.
I find I can do everything needed over ssh, even installing and running x11vnc on the remote (Linux) host to take control of the desktop so I never bothered with RDC\RDP applications.
A jumphost set up at the remote end can sometimes make life easier.
