Here is one bit of advice that I use (at least metaphorically) almost
every day:

Measure twice. Cut once.

Sometimes I measure more than twice. :)

It's a matter of attention or lack thereof. So consider this an
opportunity to learn to take responsibility for your inattentive
actions.
