Okay.

However I still think that is a very bad taste for an April fools joke.

And… it still raises the question: Did anyone gain unauthorized access
to the systems or did someone of the staff implement the April's fools
"joke"?

If anyone unauthorized gained access… I'd still completely replace
affected systems as is it quite challenging to be sure to have removed
all ways of gaining unauthorized access the attacker might have
implemented. Never try to fix a compromised system.
