no, the preferences file is not needed any more for policykit.
don't know about nvidia drivers, using mate with lightdm+elogind.
mate-power-manager is broken for me (no suspend, broken battery icon -
bug #240), so using repo hezeh.org ascii version - only one found to be
working so far.
