The X Window System provides a standard way to configure the widgets,
but I don't know if it respects it in any case or it depends on the
graphics library respecting those settings.

Here's what I have in ~/.Xresources:

! xterm settings

XTerm*reverseVideo: true
XTerm*utf8Title: true
! medium sized font by default
XTerm*initialFont: 4
! make Meta-key be Alt instead of Esc
XTerm*metaSendsEscape: true

And here's what I have in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 to darken the selected tab
in the panel/tasklist under xfce:
