Not a docker.io package in Ascii, but I am using Docker Inc's docker-ce
package for Debian Stretch without much trouble.
I've added a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list file with
deb
https://download.docker.com/linux/debian stretch edge
and added that repository's signing key as [documented in step 3][1] of
setting up the repository.

https://docs.docker.com/install/linux/docker-ce/debian/#set-up-the-repository
Please note that 5:18.09.0~3-0~debian-stretch does *not* start the
daemon automatically. 18.06.1~ce~3-0~debian does. I suggest you
install the latter with
sudo apt install docker-ce=18.06.1~ce~3-0~debian
first and upgrade to the latest version if you really want to. After
the upgrade you can (re)start the daemon with
sudo invoke-rc.d docker start
This should be fixed in the next docker-ce release.
Hope this helps,
