thanks for your reply - as it is only a slight change to my previous configuration, fsmithreds solution perfectly suits my needs and works very well, so I'll stick with that:

The autologin starts the videoplayer via .bashrc (startx) and .Xsession. If it exits for any reason, it gets automatically restarted: a very simple "videoplayd" (full documentation yet to be written).
