Email is way more reliable than IRC. Every now and then my IRC
connection gets reset due to a timeout. Then I'll miss what ever
happens there until my IRC client automatically rejoins. Or worse, I
get a power blackout for hours, days, the longest in recent memory was
a week. That's hours of IRC messages I'll miss. Email at least tries a
bit harder to retry transmission, and eventually bounces if it can't get
through. The bounce tells the sender that the email was not received.
For the "you have to do something, and do it soonish" type
announcements, the more reliable the method of delivery, the better.
Using multiple methods is good though.
