Running the commands to do these things in an xterm makes them

Works well _and_ consistent over time! ;->
(Taste in such things is obviously individual.)
[1] Quickest way to do an orderly shutdown from local console, in my
own view: Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-Del, turn power off when it starts to POST.
Much less trouble than mousing around.
