Machine is up, Jenkins is running, but it replies with a 500 error after
around 30 seconds.

If nobody is touching its config, maybe it only needs a restart?
If that's the case and this happens somewhat periodically, a local monit
instance could take care of this automatically with minimal setup effort
to avoid both having ci.d.o down and having to manually bring it up
again :) which, of course, depends on the people having access to the
machine.
