Your scanner should be assigned an appropriate group by the rules in
/lib/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules which run

/bin/setfacl -m g:scanner:rw $env{DEVNAME}

You can check whether this happened with the getfacl command.

What scanner are you using?
