Hallo Lars,

if it really is a Toshiba, you could try this little script which I
once wrote for my precious Tecra 9000. If no value (0-7) is given as
argument, it simply cycles through the brightness levels, so it's
possible to assign a keyboard shortcut:

- ---snip---

#!/bin/bash
# toshiba laptop lcd brightness control
NEW="$@"
CURRENT=`cat /proc/acpi/toshiba/lcd | grep brightness\: | sed 's/[^0-9]*//g'`
if [ -n "$NEW" ] ; then
  if [[ "$NEW" != [0-7] ]] ; then
    echo -e "error: invalid value" && exit 0
  fi
elif [[ "$CURRENT" == "7" ]] ; then
  NEW=0
else
  NEW=$(($CURRENT+1))
fi
echo -e "brightness:\t\t"$NEW"\nbrightness_levels:\t8"  > /proc/acpi/toshiba/lcd 2> /dev/null &
echo "lcd brightness (0-7) set to "$NEW""

- ---snap---

libre Grüße,

Florian
