For Nietzsche, Socrates was an ugly, hyper-rational dialectician; in a
word he's a pleb. Nietzsche believed when a culture's sensibilities turn
to reason, logic and specialised fields of knowledge for Truths about
the world it is actually a sign of intellectual and spiritual decay.
The problem with privileging Reason, Logic, Dialectical essences etc. in
the pursuit of knowledge is they uproot a culture from traditional
values, conventional meaning structures, high art forms, healthy rituals
and myths etc., because none of those things can be rationally
justified. Plus dialectical thinking has a bias for detached abstract
thought processes. That is why it ushers in a metaphysical way of seeing
that severs ties from the instincts, deeper intuitions and even nature
herself.
Today we are facing very similar problems with our abstract
individualism, opposition to nature, broken historical ties etc. There
are no real philosophical Truths mediated via any of the classical
metaphysical ideas today -- we are ruled by the opinions of the masses.
There are no high arts to speak of, no true love for the humanities and
crude desires masquerade as moral truths and rights etc. What a mess!
