You should because the service command cleans the environment. If you do
„/etc/init.d/<service> start” you can have strange results.

It is available in SLES11 and Debian (since 6?). Which distro doesn’t
have service?
Besides, as far as I know the service command is independant from the
init system, so it works with systemd or sysvinit.

These are valid points. SLES doesn’t have bash completion in 11. IIRC tab
completion with service works in SLES 12 which uses systemd.
In Debian or debian based distros you have to install bash-completion and
activate it in /etc/bash.bashrc.

No, but with bash-completion this works with service in Debian as well.
