Xfce's always been a little shaky, and more and more it seems to be
part of the new regime.

I use LXDE, which works identically every single time, has a very small
footprint, and is completely workable to anyone who could work win9x.

I don't know how LXDE compares to Mate, but I do know LXDE is
wonderful, svelte and easy, and should be considered any time a
replacement for Xfce is discussed.

I once tried lxde and was not impressed. Maybe it's improved since then. But now that it's moving to qt (kde crapola), who knows what will happen with it. FWIW, I have not yet met a qt app that I liked the look, feel or functionality. In any case, we should be thinking about alternates. Perhaps lxde will remain a viable candidate . . . :)
