I believe it would be far better to compile your own kernel, rather
than dist-upgrading to unstable (which is usually not that much fun,
indeed, especially if you use your computer for work...).

You might be able to start from a

make oldconfig

and then do any necessary tweaking with

make menuconfig

Then the easiset thing if you have not complied a kernel before is to
use kernel-package, which can compile your kernel and make a .deb out
of it.
