For me, Adblock Plus still works flawlessly (knocking on wood).

One alternative you didn't mention is probably the oldest one: run your
own DNS server, and blackhole the ad hosting domains. Can be time
consuming though, as there are just so many of those @#*$.

What I'm worried about now is sites that detect blocking and refuse to
let you in. Example: forbes.com. But I guess the proxy solution would
work around this, too.
